Critic’s Pick – The Sacramento Bee (June 15th of 2007)

Angela Oates’ richly textured, phantasmagoric, large-scale charcoal drawings make one think of sources ranging from cave paintings to modern Mexican surrealism. Drawing and sanding and drawing again on polypropylene, she creates haunting figurative abstractions that bloom and fade like dreams. They are up through July 7 with Matt Sesow’s scary but harmless paintings of grotesque, brightly colored faces at Pamela Skinner/Gwenna Howard Contemporary Art, 723 S St. (916) 446-178
